What is copywriting?

Copywriting is the process of writing ‘copy’ – that’s the term used by marketing and advertising agencies to describe the text in brochures, adverts, leaflets, websites, direct-mail letters, and so on. Copy is written with a target audience in mind, usually to sell or promote a product or service.

Why are you called Good As Gold Writing Services and not Good As Gold Copywriting Services then?

A-ha! Very observant of you. The reason we offer ‘writing services’ is because the term ‘copywriting’ is not widely understood, with many people confusing it with ‘copyrighting’ (see below). And our services are not limited to copywriting: we also offer editing, proofreading and the writing of text that isn’t sales-driven, like magazine features.

So do copywriters work on copyright?

No – copywriting and copyrighting might sound alike, but they’re different. Copyright is a legal concept, which refers to the intellectual ownership of a piece of work. Copywriting is the writing of marketing or advertising ‘copy’.

Just to confuse you, though, we think copywriters should have a good understanding of copyright law, so the ideas behind their campaigns don’t infringe on other people’s intellectual property.

Why are you called Good As Gold?

Three reasons. Firstly, we’re based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter which has been home to a thriving jewellery trade since the eighteenth century. It’s a fascinating place and we wanted to celebrate being here.

Secondly, Good As Gold deals in words, and we love the dynamism of the English language. The phrase ‘as good as gold’ came into being when banknotes – with no intrinsic value – began replacing gold and silver coins as currency. So ‘good’ referred to paper money that was genuine and not counterfeit. But in time the more common meaning of the word ‘good’ took over and now people use ‘as good as gold’ to describe an obedient child or pet. Just another geeky reason to love writing …

And finally, we believe that well-written, intelligent copy can be as precious as gold to your company.
